Prior to 1763, the British government had largely ignored the colonies in America, allowing them to form their own systems of government (though they were held accountable to the British government) and live largely as a separate entity from their Anglican bretheren. However, the French and Indian Wars reversed what historians now call the British policy of salutary neglect. Discuss first the role the French and Indian Wars played in causing the British to greatly increase their role in the lives of colonial citizens, then answer the question, "Did the actions of the British government really justify a revolution against the British government?" Explain your answer and discuss with other students' responses.
This is your final blog post assignment for the summer. Your responses will be due August 6, 2012. I hope you all are working hard and finishing up your summer work as school will be here before you know it. Again, if you have any questions before school starts, feel free to email me and I will help in any way that I can. Here is your question and enjoy the final days of summer break!

Hope everyone is having a good summer so far and is working hard on your summer work. Time for your second blog post assignment! A response to this question as well as a reply to one other student's post will be due July 20, 2012. Here we go!
Question: As the English colonies grew more prominent in North America, three distinct regions or types of colonies begin to develop; the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies. Discuss the differences between these three gr, focusing on the reasons for their formation and the impact that had on slavery in those colonies. Welcome to the first of a series of 3 blog discussions for your summer work. Due to my late posting of this prompt, you can feel free to take up until next week (June 22) to complete the posting. I would like you to first post an answer to the questions provided below. Once you've done that, I would like you to respond to another student's answer, commenting on whether or not you agree with the conclusions reached and why. This should hopefully be a constructive discussion on the prompt and allow you to interact with each other, as well as myself, on the subject. With that said, here is the promt!
You have been reading (I hope!) extensively on early Amerian history and the impact of European exploration and colonization. First, I would like you to discuss the role the growing European economic system of mercantilism played in the growing European interests in the "New World." Second, do you feel this economic opportunity justified the actions of Europeans once they arrived in the Americas? Justify your answer with specific examples from the text or any other significant source you would like. Help With the Flashcards: Many of you have emailed me wanting help with the flashcards, themes (government, culture, economics) and eras. The largest problem I've heard from you are on the geographic terms (i.e., the Great Lakes, Appalachian Moiuntains, et cetera). Seeing how these are landforms that simply set up a background knowledge of America, I would not worry about fitting these terms in with an era (obviously they have been there through every era we will discuss in the class) or a theme (feel free to add geography as a theme if you would like, but its not required). Hopefully I've addressed everyone's questions on the flashcards, but if you are still confused, drop me an email and I'll try to clear it up as best I can. Have a great June and enjoy the break! |
